Stop Second-Guessing Yourself and Grow Your Self-esteem with Brain Training

For most of us, getting older comes with some significant benefits: we tend to get more mature as we learn from our mistakes; we begin to grasp what’s truly important in life (family, friends, learning, etc.); and we better understand and develop our interests, values, and boundaries.

But aging also brings potential problems if we don’t invest in our health: joint pain, lack of flexibility, weight gain, and high blood pressure. Without interventions—like exercise, stretching, good nutrition, or medication—these issues can worsen, sometimes leading to more severe health concerns, limited mobility, and a decreased interest in daily activities.

The same is true for our brains as we age. Without investing in our cognitive health, we may experience memory decline, slowed processing speed, and a decreased ability to multitask (among other issues), which can seriously impact our self-esteem.

You may recognize these cognitive issues in your own life as you second guess why you went into a room (Was it to grab dirty laundry? Make up the bed? Change your shoes?). Or perhaps you can’t remember your clients’ names as well as you used to, or close family members’ birthdays. Maybe you’re driving has led to more near-misses lately, and you’re feeling less confident on the road.

Whatever the reason you’re second-guessing yourself, take note: Just as there are things you can do to improve your body’s performance (at any age), so too are there things you can do to improve your cognitive performance.

Cognitive Skill Training: Like Fitness for Your Brain

Cognitive skills training can provide a workout for your brain beyond good nutrition, exercise, socialization, and learning new things. But unlike working with a personal fitness trainer for a couple of months, personal brain training provides lasting results long after you’ve completed your program.

Like an initial assessment done by a personal trainer, our Brain Skills Assessment will evaluate which cognitive skills—including memory, attention, logic & reasoning, processing speed, and visual and auditory processing—are strong and need improving. For many LearningRx clients, the results of this test are illuminating—and provide hope to many who might worry that the natural process of aging is irreversible.

On the contrary, cognitive skills can be targeted and trained with fun but intense mental exercises through our one-on-one brain training programs. We’ve worked with adults and seniors who have walked in with mild cognitive impairment, memory issues, reading struggles, and attention deficits—only to have them complete the program with stronger cognitive skills and a renewed outlook on life!

Our Results

Telling you that personal brain training works for people of all ages is one thing, but sharing our results provides some science-backed data to support our claims.

In working with adults aged 50 and older, we discovered:

• Among 321 clients over the age of 50, the most dramatic improvements were seen in working memory (which is also referred to as “short-term memory”), long-term memory, and processing speed.

• Following LearningRx brain training, working memory improved an average of nine standard score points.

• After LearningRx brain training, IQ scores also improved.

If you’ve ever felt like your brain has been “in a fog” or “having trouble connecting,” LearningRx may be able to help. Whether you’re hoping to improve your memory, reading comprehension, processing speed, or increase the power of your brain, one-on-one brain training could be the solution.

To get started, contact your nearest LearningRx center to schedule a Brain Skills Assessment. The assessment only takes about an hour and can provide some valuable insights into why you’ve been struggling to think, learn, read, or remember as well as you used to. (Or, if you always had trouble, this might be the insight you need to uncover better brain skills!) There’s no obligation to enroll in personal brain training, although, if you do, we will design a program to target and train the cognitive skills that need the most considerable boost.
