Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery: How Brain Training Helps
Many victims of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) experience changes in cognitive performance, leaving victims and their families struggling with what to do next. While LearningRx doesn’t diagnose or treat TBI, our programs have aided the cognitive performance of clients with many diagnoses, including traumatic brain injury recovery.
What is a Traumatic Brain Injury?
TBIs happen in a variety of situations, from childhood playground or sports accidents to life-altering military service encounters.
Regardless of the source of the injury, a TBI can greatly impact a person’s ability to function. Common symptoms include:
- Cognitive struggles (i.e. issues with learning, reading, remembering, thinking clearly, etc.)
- Loss of consciousness
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Struggles with verbal communication
- Headaches
- Struggles with coordination
- Seizures
- Easily irritable
- Mood swings
- More lethargic than normal
Does a Traumatic Brain Injury Heal on Its Own?
For many people who have traumatic brain injuries, there is a lasting impact on their ability to function. While the brain is an incredible system with self-healing properties at any age, TBI can disrupt this pattern and leave lasting damage in some cases.
However, there is a growing body of research that shows brain training as a helpful tool to restore quality of life, memory, attention, and more in people with TBI!
What Does the Research Show?
Over a nine-year period, 386 children and adults came to LearningRx diagnosed with traumatic brain injury (TBI). We measured the cognitive skills of these clients before and after brain training. Here’s what we discovered:
- Among 386 clients with TBI, the most dramatic improvements were seen in long-term memory, auditory processing, and broad attention.
- Long-term memory skills improved an average of 3.9 years following LearningRx brain training.
- IQ scores also improved after LearningRx brain training.
Here’s a graph of these improvements:
But beyond these empirical improvements, the stories our traumatic brain injury recovery clients tell us show what a major impact brain training has on their lives.
In a case study of a 34-year-old client who was suffering effects from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Iraq, this individual experienced dramatic cognitive gains after just 18 weeks of training.

How Does Brain Training Help People Recover from Traumatic Brain Injury?
Brain training by nature rebuilds connections within the brain and allows thinking to happen faster and more easily. Whether it’s a child’s brain that is struggling to learn to read or an adult who has experienced a traumatic event, brain training accelerates cognitive growth and can help everyone think faster, remember more, and function more effectively.
Our program is designed to be used for all ages, and we can work with you to create a plan to help achieve academic, personal, or professional goals on this road of traumatic brain injury recovery.
