Writing Difficulty Overcome!
Claire is 10 years old and very bright – her logic is in the 94th percentile! However, she really struggled with reading fluency and comprehension and had developed a lot of anxiety related to writing. Faced with the task of expressing herself through writing, Claire would freeze-up and had severe writer’s block. She was advanced in math and science due to her strong logic skills, but language arts proved very difficult. These difficulties were also negatively impacting her confidence and enjoyment of school.
Claire went through our initial assessment which enabled us to identify the root cause of these struggles. Her working memory, executive processing and auditory processing all needed strengthening.
Working memory is our ability to hold and organize our thoughts and is a critical skill enabling us to organize and hold our thoughts to express ourselves verbally or in written form. Beyond writing, lower working memory impacts reading comprehension, math skills (mental math) and our ability to absorb information and follow multi-step directions.
Executive processing is the speed at which our brains function. When this is not strong, everything takes longer, and can result in students feeling overwhelmed when there is a lot on their plate or they are put on the spot. It can also result in attention issues as students have to work so hard to keep up that they cannot maintain their focus.
Auditory processing is a key reading skill as it enables us to process sounds effectively and decode words.
Claire’s LearningRx training significantly improved these cognitive skill areas, and her results were outstanding. Claire completed her LearningRx training and her confidence is way up. Her spelling and writing have improved tremendously, and she now loves reading.
