Is Tutoring the Only Option for My Child?

Everyone wants their kids to succeed at school, but that can sometimes take extra help. If your child is having a tough time in the classroom, you may be researching your options for outside support. One common answer is tutoring—but it’s not the only option, and for many students, it’s not the option that works best either.

While the role of a tutor can vary from program to program, the goal is to have private, one-on-one support with academic subjects. Usually, a tutor will be someone who’s well-versed in a particular subject, and who may have experience teaching as well. In many situations, this person acts as a personal teacher for a learner.

But not all students benefit from tutoring—and in fact, if they’ve lost their love for learning, a tutor may not be able to easily address what’s at the root of their struggles.

Let’s review why this type of teaching doesn’t always yield results. We’ll also take a look at our own alternative to tutoring: one-on-one brain training.

Exploring Alternatives to Tutoring

3 Reasons Why Tutoring Just Isn’t Working

If your learner is getting frustrated with their tutor, it’s important to know that they’re not alone. Students have different learning styles and different needs, and tutoring doesn’t always offer the support required.

Here are three reasons this type of learning may not work for your child:

  1. It re-creates the challenges of the classroom.
If your student is restless during class or freezes up when asked about course material, it’s likely that they’ll experience these same challenges when dealing with a tutor. In many ways, tutoring can replicate the difficulties of in-school learning.
  2. It’s not about the material.
With tutoring, the focus is on conveying subject-specific concepts or ideas. While your student may seem like they struggle with the material, in reality, they may be grappling with underlying learning skills. These skills, like focus and memory, aren’t usually addressed by a tutor (although brain training can help!).
  3. It’s just not a good fit.
Sometimes a tutor’s teaching style may not be a good fit for your student. It’s possible that they’re trying to teach at a pace that isn’t realistic. Or, your student may simply not mesh with them. Whatever the case—if it isn’t the right fit, it can be that much more difficult for your student to succeed in this environment.

The good news is: hiring a tutor isn’t the one and only option! Let’s take a closer look at what brain training entails.

How Brain Training Provides Support

Brain training offers learning support, but from a different angle than tutoring: instead of focusing on subject-specific material, we help students work on building the fundamental skills needed for effective learning and processing.

Through our programs, learners of all ages can practice and train those cognitive areas where they wish to see growth: working memory, attention, logic, and more! Here’s how it can be a welcome alternative to tutoring:

  • A dynamic and supportive environment.
With our cognitive training programs, students practice skill-building through drills, games, and exercises. It’s a dynamic, challenging, and exciting environment that keeps them on their toes—and it can be a breath of fresh air after the classroom.
  • A customized approach to training.
We personalize each of our training programs based on that learner’s specific cognitive profile. The goal is for learners to excel on their terms, improving in those areas where they wish to see results. This approach empowers students to get excited about learning again.
  • Cultivating independent learning skills.
When students lack the underlying cognitive skills needed for the classroom, it makes learning that much more daunting. Our programs help learners cultivate these foundational skills and abilities. Unlike tutoring, where the goal is usually to improve learning in one subject, we help students improve their learning skills across the board.

Helping Learners Succeed Through Brain Training

When students and their parents are frustrated by the results of tutoring, it’s time to explore brain training! Through intense, packed training sessions, learners can target key skills like focus, processing speed, and memory. As they progress, they can become more confident in the way they think, learn, read, and remember!

If tutoring is yielding some results but not enough, it’s also worthwhile to consider brain training in addition to hiring a tutor. Because we customize our programs based on each student, we can work with your child to help them excel on their terms!

Whether or not you’re considering tutoring, brain training can help your learner. To find out more about our programs, visit our website or contact us at 866-BRAIN-01.
