What Are Brain Training Programs?

When you’re investigating different options for learning support, you may come across the concept of brain training programs. At LearningRx, we’re frequently asked: What does brain training involve? How can it help my child?

To put it simply, brain training or cognitive training is just another form of one-on-one support for students of all ages—kids, teens, and adults. It can be great for students who need subject-specific help in math or reading, learners who have a tough time in academic environments, or those with cognitive differences. It can be great for learners who want a challenge, too!

But how does it work? It’s helpful to compare cognitive training to personal training. Personal training programs can target, activate, and hone specific muscle groups. As a result, those who complete such a program can find themselves making gains in strength, speed, or physical ability.

Our training programs are designed with a similar effect in mind—except, instead of focusing on muscle groups, we focus on the mind. Students exert key cognitive skills like focus or memory. As they improve their cognitive skills, they can also see gains in the ways they think, learn, and remember!

Let’s explore programs from LearningRx in more detail.

A Closer Look At One-on-One Brain Training

How Our Brain Training Programs Work

At LearningRx, every brain training program is different. That’s because we tailor each program with a specific learner in mind. It means we can be more precise in training—and as a result, students can get the dedicated support they need.

To get started, we complete a comprehensive Brain Skills Assessment. This allows us to get to know each learner as well as their strengths and the areas where they struggle. It’s the foundation of our programs, allowing us to map out a unique program suited to each student.

Through multiple weekly sessions, students work through their programs with a dedicated, one-on-one brain trainer. Our programs are dynamic, intense, and focused, giving learners a vibrant environment that’s different from the typical classroom setup. It can be ideal for students who’ve previously found little luck with tutoring or who frequently struggle in class!

Honing Key Cognitive Skills

What kinds of cognitive skills do our brain training programs focus on? At LearningRx, we target 7 core skills, including:

  • Working memory
  • Long-term memory
  • Focus or attention
  • Visual processing
  • Auditory processing
  • Processing speed
  • Logic and reasoning

These brain skills are foundational to learning. For students who don’t have a strong base of cognitive skills, it can be that much harder to learn, read, think, and remember. That’s where LearningRx comes in.

Through games, drills, and exercises, students target and exert specific brain skills. As they advance through their program, they tackle progressively bigger challenges. Along the way, they’re always encouraged and supported by their dedicated brain trainer! For learners of all ages, we offer the chance to build up essential, versatile skills that are valuable well beyond the classroom—and can be used again and again throughout life.

About Our Brain Training Programs

What kinds of brain training programs are available for students? At LearningRx, we offer an enormous range of options that can be customized to each student’s specific situation. For those who struggle with subject-specific skills, we offer reading help, math help, and studying help programs.

But that’s not all. We also offer different programs for kids, teens, and adults—as well as programs that target specific cognitive skills. Our targeted approach means we can offer more meaningful programs based on what each learner is looking for.

We know that the mind is capable of truly extraordinary things. When students have a tough time in class, it can make them more frustrated by the learning process. But we’re dedicated to helping each student discover their unique potential—and to get them re-energized about learning and thinking!
