Brain Training Research for Kids with Learning Disabilities

Students with learning disabilities often receive labels. They are defined by what they struggle with, and many schools move them through the system without really digging deeper and answering the question: “Why?” As parents, it’s our job to make sure our kids are receiving the support they need in order to reach their fullest potential. Today we’re going to unpack a little bit about how cognitive skills come into play, but we encourage you to call us and have a conversation about your child’s unique strengths and struggles because every brain is different!

How Common Are Learning Disabilities?

Learning disabilities are more prevalent than many people realize. In the United States, approximately 15% of the population (or 1 in 7 individuals) is affected by some form of learning disability. These disabilities can manifest in various ways, such as:

  • Difficulties with reading (dyslexia),
  • Struggling with writing (dysgraphia),
  • Chronic overwhelm with or an inability to grasp math (dyscalculia),
  • Or issues processing information (processing disorders).

These challenges can often lead to frustration and a sense of inadequacy in students, which is why it’s crucial to understand how cognitive skills are connected to learning disabilities.

How Are Cognitive Skills and Learning Disabilities Linked?

Cognitive skills are the fundamental mental abilities that allow us to process information, learn, and solve problems. These skills include attention, memory, processing speed, logic and reasoning, and auditory and visual processing. We all have strong and weak areas. However, in individuals with learning disabilities, one or more of these cognitive skills might not develop as effectively as in their peers, leading to difficulties in acquiring and retaining new information.

For instance, a student with dyslexia might struggle with phonological awareness, an essential skill for reading. A student with dyscalculia might have difficulty with visual-spatial processing, making it challenging to grasp mathematical concepts. Recognizing the connection between cognitive skills and learning disabilities enables us to address the root causes of the challenges students face on a daily basis.

What Does Research Show About LearningRx Brain Training for Learning Disabilities?

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in interventions that target cognitive skills to help individuals with learning disabilities overcome their challenges. Research in this field has shown promising results. Several studies have indicated that targeted cognitive training may be able to significantly improve the cognitive skills associated with specific learning disabilities.

Studies have demonstrated that students who undergo LearningRx brain training show enhanced cognitive abilities. These gains transfer over into real life, leading to improved academic performance in many cases.

For example…

  • A study involving students with dyslexia found that after completing a LearningRx program, participants exhibited better reading fluency, sound awareness, and phonological processing skills.
  • Similar positive outcomes have been observed in students with ADHD, dyscalculia, and other learning disabilities.
  • In a study with 2,756 kids and teens with a learning disability, the average gain in skills across the board was 3.5 years.

These gains are a HUGE boost for these kids who have been left behind in many ways! Along with gains in skills, parents have reported improvements in things like:

  • Attitudes about school,
  • Overall confidence,
  • Improved relationships and communication,
  • And more.

It’s important to note that while cognitive training can be beneficial, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Each individual’s brain is unique, and a personalized approach to cognitive training is essential for optimal results. Every outcome is different, but we’d love to talk more about how LearningRx may be a helpful tool for your family!
