Help Your Child Finish the School Year Strong with these Tips

The ongoing COVID pandemic has caused a certain level of exhaustion among most people. But for parents and teachers, the pandemic has caused extra fatigue – especially with distance learning or wondering if your child’s school will be the next to shut down.

Combine COVID fatigue with the typical exhaustion that comes at this point in the school year, and it can be hard for students to finish the school year strong. With your support, however, students can maintain the progress they’ve already made.

Stick to your existing routine to finish the school year strong

The weather is progressively getting warmer and there are more daylight hours, which makes it inviting to stay outside and play for hours. It’s tempting to push dinner back an hour or let your kids play outside past their bedtime. However, maintaining the routine you’ve followed all year will help your students stay on track to finish the school year strong.

Buy new school supplies

Remember the excitement your students had in August when you picked out their new school supplies? Sometimes, a new pen or notebook can be enough to get excited about the work ahead. You don’t need to break your budget buying everything, but a few small things can go a long way.

Make your student’s workspace comfortable

One of the best ways to help your students finish the school year strong is by ensuring they have a clean, comfortable place to work. Was their desk clean and organized at the start of the school year? What does it look like now?

If your student’s workspace is messy, cluttered, dirty, or uncomfortable, it’s not going to be a space where they want to spend time. Make their workspace inviting by adding a lamp or a chair cushion, or help them tidy the items on their desk. For students back in the classroom, work with their teacher to ensure a tidy desk and workspace.

Celebrate accomplishments from the school year

At this point in the year, students are exhausted. We’re five months into yet another school year during  a pandemic. Of course students are struggling with motivation. To help your student finish the school year strong, remind them of their goals, and celebrate what they’ve already accomplished this year.

Remind your student of the hard work they’ve put in thus far, and show them the outcome of their work. Look at tests or projects that they completed earlier in the year, and review good grades or comments from their previous report cards.

Seeing how their hard work has paid off can be good motivation to finish the school year strong.

Reward your students for getting their work done

Rewarding students for achieving the basics can seem rudimentary, but it can help them with their end of the year progress.. Set goals and rewards for your students to encourage them to work hard. For example, if your student watches too much TV before doing their homework, treat them to a night at the movies if they get their homework done before dinner every night for two weeks.
