10 FAQs about LearningRx Personal Brain Training Curious about the difference between tutoring and brain training? Or maybe you’re wondering how a smart kid can still have a learning struggle. Perhaps you’re curious if one-on-one brain training can be done from home via video without losing effectiveness. Or maybe you’re questioning whether older adults experiencing mild cognitive decline can benefit from cognitive skills training. We’re answering 10 of the most frequently asked questions that we get about LearningRx personal brain training to help you decide if it’s right for you or someone you love. 1. What’s the difference between tutoring and brain training? Although tutoring and brain training both provide solutions to students, they address different problems. Tutoring redelivers information that students might have missed the first time, due to an extended illness, mid-schoolyear move, or even a substitute teacher. Brain training, on the other hand, focuses on strengthening core learning and thinking skills to make it easier for anyone (not just students!) to understand, process, and remember what they learn. By addressing the root cause of learning difficulties, personal brain training can help anyone understand and retain information the first time. Thus, boosting confidence and creating more independence in school, work, and life in general. 2. Who can benefit from personal brain training? At LearningRx, we’ve worked with clients of all ages, from early learners and teens to college students and seniors. We’ve also helped children and adults who have been diagnosed with ADHD, autism, traumatic brain injury, dyslexia, speech disorders, and age-related memory loss. Perhaps most surprising to many parents, we’ve also worked with gifted children looking to get a boost to their cognitive skills. 3. How do you determine if someone needs personal brain training? Before our clients get started, we conduct a Brain Skills Assessment to determine which cognitive skills are strong and which can benefit from training. The results of this one-hour assessment often provide an “Aha!” moment for families as they get insights into why the person performs well on some tasks but struggles with others. During the Brain Skills Assessment, your child will complete a series of activities that measure cognitive skills. These include logic & reasoning, memory, processing speed, attention, and visual and auditory processing. The results of cognitive testing help us map your learner’s unique cognitive profile by identifying which cognitive skills have the most room for improvement. We’ll then create a personalized brain training program designed to target and train the underperforming skills that might be holding your learner back from reaching their maximum potential. 4. What is a typical brain training experience like? Based on the results of the Brain Skills Assessment, our team will create a custom plan to address the root cause of learning difficulties by targeting and training the cognitive skills which have the most room for improvement. Your loved one will be paired with their own personal brain trainer throughout the duration of their program. The sessions will include brain games, cognitive drills and mental exercises to build stronger thinking and learning skills. Although the average training plan is about 24 weeks with a few sessions per week, the duration and frequency of the program will depend on the individual’s needs. 5.
