Can personal brain training help seniors?September is National Healthy Aging Month and it’s the perfect time to answer one the most frequently asked questions we get at LearningRx: “Can personal brain training help seniors?” The short answer is “Yes!” Although most adults experience some age-related cognitive decline, learning and brain development doesn’t end when you become an adult. In fact, you’re NEVER too old to improve your cognitive skills! What exactly are cognitive skills? They’re the fundamental tools we use to perform mental tasks, like learning, paying attention, solving problems, reading, and remembering. These brain skills including memory, auditory processing, attention, visual processing, , processing speed, and logic & reasoning. The stronger these skills, the easier (and faster) it is to learn. What results has LearningRx seen in adults over 50? Over a nine-year period, 321 adults over the age of 50 came to LearningRx. We measured the cognitive performance of these clients before brain training, and again after brain training. Here’s what we discovered: (See graph) Among 321 clients over the age of 50, the most dramatic improvements were seen in working memory (also known as short-term memory), long-term memory, and processing speed. Working memory improved an average of nine standard score points following LearningRx brain training. IQ scores also improved after LearningRx brain training. Although we can’t guarantee you’ll achieve similar results, we think our past clients’ results speak for themselves! How do I get started? It all begins with our hour-long and reasonably priced Brain Skills Assessment. This will be the first step our LearningRx brain trainers take to get insight into your cognitive strengths and weaknesses and will give us a good idea of what kinds of training will benefit you most.
