LearningRX

One Student, an Entire Family Impacted through Brain Training

While most parents enroll their child or teen in LearningRx personal brain training to help with academic performance at school, many experiences latent improvements from the program that impacts the entire family.

Such was the case for Tate’s parents, who brought him to the Owatonna, Minnesota LearningRx in hopes of boosting his cognitive skills.

The ninth-grader was struggling to remember multistep directions and tune out distractions in school and at home. He had difficulty with spelling and would often take longer than his peers to complete homework.

Tate says he knew he had trouble remembering more than one task at a time, something his dad noticed as well. In addition to improving his working memory, his goals in personal brain training included working through distractions and developing his cognitive skills to help him not only complete homework faster, but also actually enjoy the process of learning.

Family reviews LearningRx experience: it changed our whole family! Owatonna, MN Review

Since completing the LearningRx program, Tate’s mom has noticed some major changes. “I think he’s more comfortable asking questions,” she notes. “And he’s more efficient with his time now because he feels more comfortable and confident in what he’s doing.”

Tate’s father agrees, noting, “That homework process is so much better now. I used to come home and my wife would be at her wit’s end when it came to homework because something that should take an hour would take three to four hours to do. It’s just a much more efficient process. Much more calming. In addition, his grades have all gone up and he’s doing fabulous.”

For Tate’s family, seeing him less distracted and more confident is wonderful, as are his improved grades and time management. But they’ve also noticed that Tate smiles much more frequently and seems to have matured through the process.

“LearningRx has been wonderful for our family, and wonderful for him,” says Tate’s dad. “It’s really just helped our whole household be more comfortable and enjoyable. It’s just been a real treat.”

Tate’s mom adds that she’s noticed improvements beyond the classroom and homework; even Tate’s relationships have been positively affected since finishing his program with LearningRx.

“LearningRx is a family commitment but it was great. It brought all of us closer together and we watched Tate grow into this confident kid that we never imagined that he could be.” She adds that even his relationships with his teachers and his sisters have gotten stronger. “It’s almost a lifestyle change, not just a change for Tate’s brain.”

How LearningRx personal brain training works

While LearningRx does integrate some elements of tutoring into its programs, tutoring and brain training provide solutions to different problems. Tutoring helps deliver information—such as math formulas or important historical facts, but personal brain training addresses the root cause of learning struggles by targeting and training weak cognitive skills. Also known as “brain skills,” these foundational tools are necessary to read, think, remember, pay attention, and more.

Most learning struggles are caused by weak cognitive skills, which include auditory and visual processing, memory, processing speed, attention, and logic & reasoning. If even one skill is weak, it can affect the other skills and cause a learning struggle. In some cases, research has found that weak skills come in clusters.

Every initial consultation at LearningRx starts with a Brain Skills Assessment to find the root cause of the learning, reading, or memory struggle. This test takes about an hour and the results provide information about which cognitive skills are strong, and which could use a boost.

Using the results of the Brain Skills Assessment, LearningRx creates a personal brain training program that targets and trains cognitive skills. The client then works one on one with their brain trainer, who uses fun but intense mental exercises to strengthen the brain skills that need it most. The best one-on-one brain training programs use loading, intensity, and feedback, among other components. When cognitive skills are strong, learning and reading are faster and easier—in any subject.

LearningRx’s programs have helped more than 100,000 children, teens, and adults see life-changing gains. To schedule a no-obligation Brain Skills Assessment, contact your nearest LearningRx center, which can be found on www.LearningRx.com.
