Tips to Support ADHD Kids Over the Holidays

Navigating the holidays with an ADHD child can be a challenge, below are some tips to support ADHD kids over the holidays that can help:

Maintain Structure: With more time off and more travelling, schedules can be disrupted.  In spite of these changes, it is important to try to keep consistent wake-up, meal, and bedtime schedules to avoid overstimulation or overtiredness.

Prepare for Transitions: Changes in routine also cause unfamiliar events and transitions.  For those with ADHD, this can he stressful. Give your child a heads-up before transitions, such as moving from one activity to another or leaving a relative’s house. Using visual timers or fun countdowns can help make these shifts smoother.

Create a Quiet Space: Even the most extraverted of us benefit from down time. To make this easier, have a quiet corner or a “calm zone” where your child can retreat if they feel overwhelmed. Fill it with soothing items like soft blankets, noise-canceling headphones, or toys they enjoy.Plan Physical Activities: There can also be a lot of eating – especially sweets – and less activity given the colder weather.  Incorporate activities that allow your child to release energy—taking a walk after meals, playing a game outside, an indoor dance break, or jumping on the trampoline. This can prevent the buildup of pent-up energy for those with ADHD.

Limit Sugar and Screen Time: Holidays are often filled with sweets and screens. Try to set boundaries for these, as they can add to overstimulation and impulsivity.

Set Clear Expectations and Reinforce Positives: Explain the plan for the day in simple, easy-to-grasp terms, and praise or reward your child for following directions or demonstrating patience.

Prepare for Downtime Activities: Bring small games, books, or fidget toys for downtime, like waiting in line or sitting for a meal, to help them stay engaged without getting restless.

If you implement these strategies, it can significantly help you and your ADHD child have a positive experience during the Holidays.
