Johnny loved Math – reading? Not so much! But why?
Johnny loved math and was very strong in this subject, but he struggled in reading fluency, comprehension and writing. His standardized test scores continued to show his reading struggles and finally, in 5th grade, his parents decided to take action.
Johnny was receiving reading interventions in school – but they were not seeing improvement.
Why is it that tutoring programs or school strategies often do not result in reading improvements? At birth, our brains are wired to pick up spoken language, but this is not true with reading. Reading is a skill that needs to be trained and the key to successful reading is strong cognitive skills. Specifically, if auditory processing, long-term memory and/or visual processing are not strong, reading will prove be a struggle. These skills are typically the root cause of most reading struggles. Until these skills are strengthened and the obstacles to reading removed, students are typically trying to tread water every school year as expectations increase.
This was the case with Johnny. His logic and reasoning and other skills like working memory and processing speed were strong which really helped him in math. But his key reading skills were low and until these were addressed, Johnny would likely continue to struggle with reading and writing. JHis parents were referred to LearningRx and Johnny experienced significant improvements as his LearningRx training unlocked reading for him. Now years later – through junior high and high school – Johnny is continuing his strong reading!
Between 2010 and 2021, over 11,936 students completed a LearningRx reading program. These children improved reading skills by 3.5 years on average compared to peers. In another study, more than 90% of LearningRx graduates improved their performance on state tests for reading achievement! This is true whether students have general reading struggles or the difficulty has been diagnosed as dyslexia.
